This document outlines my policy related to use of social media. Although social media has become a main channel for communication in present days, privacy and confidentiality are not guaranteed in these forms of communication. I therefore would like to establish an understanding of how I conduct myself on the Internet as a mental health professional and how you can expect me to respond to interactions that may occur between us on the Internet.
Professional and personal accounts
I have a professional social media pages for the sole purpose of professional matters regarding my service as a therapist. At times, I post quotes, info media and articles related to mental wellness and therapy. These professional pages, posts and accounts are separate from any personal accounts, which I hold as an individual. I do not communicate with, or contact clients through my social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, etc.
Please understand that I am unable to accept friend or contact requests from current or former clients on any social networking site. This is because it can compromise your confidentiality and our therapeutic relationship. Please do not use messaging on social media or networking sites to contact me, as the security of these sites cannot be ensured. It can compromise your privacy.
Current, former, or potential clients may follow my professional social media page if they wish. I will not follow any client on any social media platforms. If there is anything from your online life that you wish to share with me as a process of your therapy, please bring them into your session where we can view and explore them together, during the therapy hour.
I do not normally use web searches such as Google, Yahoo, or other searchable sites to gather information about you without your permission; extremely rare exceptions may be made during a crisis. For instance, if I have reason to suspect you are a danger to yourself or others and I have exhausted all other reasonable means to contact you and/or your emergency contact, I then may use a search engine for information to ensure your welfare. If this ever occurs, I will fully document the search and discuss it with you as early as is feasible.
Please be aware that if you use location-based services on your mobile phone, it may compromise your privacy while attending sessions at my office. To maintain your privacy and confidentiality, please avoid a check-in location on various sites such as Facebook, Foursquare, etc. Enabled GPS tracking makes it possible for others to surmise that you are a therapy client due to regular check-ins at my office location.
Thank you for taking the time to review the social media policy. If you have questions or concerns about any of these policies or regarding our potential interactions online, please feel free to ask and discuss them in your session.
